Afghanistan and Turkmenistan signed TREATY On Strategic Partnership

Upon the request of H.E Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov president of Turkmenistan, H.E. Mohammad Ashraf Ghani president of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan paid an official visit to Ashgabat on 20-21 February, 2019.

Both presidents had talks on current situation, the future of the Afghanistan-Turkmenistan relations and also on the regional & international issues.

TREATY On Strategic Partnership and Joint Statement were also signed by both the presidents of I. R. Afghanistan and Turkmenistan at the Ruhyet Palace.

The signing of Afghanistan-Turkmenistan Strategic Partnership Treaty will help the two countries to further expand their political, economic and security cooperation.

President Ghani said that the Strategic Partnership Treaty is a milestone and will increase relations between the two nations and relations between the two countries will remain sustainable and based on mutual respect and mutual interests,”.

In addition, president Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said his country strongly supports the resolution of the conflict in Afghanistan through diplomatic means and that Turkmenistan is ready to cooperate with Afghanistan in this regard.

President Ghani said terrorism is a serious problem in the region and the world and there is a need for cooperation and coordination to tackle the issue.

Currently, Afghanistan and Turkmenistan are cooperating on a number of areas including energy and commerce and over the Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India (TAPI) natural gas pipeline project.

At the end of the meeting, the relevant authorities signed the following bilateral cooperation agreements in presence of the two countries’ Presidents:

01 –  Agreement on Air Services;
02 – Agreement on Cooperation and Mutual Assistance in Customs Matters;
03 – Agreement on International Railway Checkpoint at the Turkmen-Afghan state border;
04 – MOU on increasing the volume of supplied electric energy to Herat province;
05 – MOU on construction of Aqina -Andkhoy railway lines;
06 – MOU on the Development of Cooperation in the field of Oil and Gas
07 – MOU on cooperation between national archive of Afghanistan and national institute of language, literature and manuscripts named after Magtymguly of academy of sciences of Turkmenistan;
08 – Regulations on organization of railway communication through the Turkmen – afghan state border between stations Serhetabat – Torghundi;
