Railway Project between Afghanistan, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan to be Inaugurated Soon

President Hamid Karzai met today with Rashid Meredov, Foreign Minister of Turkmenistan.

The meeting was held in the Presidential Palace, where Turkmenistan’s Foreign Minister conveyed to President Karzai, the good wishes of Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhammadov.

He also handed over to President Karzai, an invitation from the President of Turkmenistan, requesting him to visit Turkmenistan for the inauguration ceremony to be soon held for the joint railway project.

Accepting the invitation, President Karzai called the railway project not only good for welfare of the three countries but also in the best interest of the region.

The President thanked Turkmenistan for its assistance and cooperation in the past ten years.

The two sides also discussed the TAPI gas pipeline and other projects in the region.

It is to note that shortly prior to Nawroz celebrations this year, the Presidents of Afghanistan, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Ashgabat for the establishment of railway infrastructure linking Turkmenistan, Afghanistan and Tajikistan.

The railrway will start from Atamurat -Ymamnazar of Turkmenistan leading to Akina-Andkhoy of Afghanistan, then connecting to Tajikistan via Shirkhan port of Kunduz province.
