Number of Afghan Students Have Increased In Turkmenistan

In addition to developing relations in the political, economic, cultural and commercial spheres, Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and Turkmenistan has also signed an Agreement on Cooperation in the field of Higher Education.

The agreement was signed by the Foreign Ministers of both countries on March 7, 2002 in Ashgabat.

Article 4 of the Agreement states:

“In order to educate specialists, the Turkmen side accepts 100 Afghan students every year for studying at Turkmenistan Higher Education and Professional Institutions during the period of the validity of this agreement.”

After the election in 2007, H. E. Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov the President of Turkmenistan awarded annually 30 scholarships to students from Afghanistan.

The Afghan students require to study Turkmen language at Lebab University for the period of one year after which they are assigned to Turkmen Agricultural Institute, The Turkmen State Institute of Transport and Communications, The Turkmen State Institute of Oil and, The Turkmen State Power Engineering Institute and The Teacher Training University for continuing their higher education.

The representative of the Embassy continuously keeps in touch with the students.

At present, 164 Afghan students are studying in Turkmenistan.
