Deputy Foreign Minister Pays an Official Visit to Ashgabat, Turkmenistan

June 2 and 3, 2016: Ashgabat – Deputy Foreign Minister Mr. Hekmat Khalil Karzai paid an official visit to Ashgabat , Turkmenistan from June 2 to 3, 2016 to attend in Afghanistan and Turkmenistan Foreign Ministries Political Consultations meeting.

On June 2, 2016, Mr. Karzai met with Deputy Foreign Minister Mr. Wepa Hajyev of Turkmenistan and they discussed and exchanged views on a wide range of issues, including cooperation in regional and international arenas; research and feasibility study of TAPI Project; railway; optic fiber; energy; holding commercial exhibitions; distribution of electricity for residents living in the Afghan border; further cooperation among provinces along the border line of the two countries; opening railway of Imam Nazar Aqina; quests for peace and security in Afghanistan and the region; border affairs; convening the sixth meeting of the joint commission for economic, technical and trade between the two countries; singing a Memorandum of Friendship; holding RECCA 7 in Ashgabat ; purchasing fuel; and export of Afghanistan’s goods to Turkmenistan markets to create trade balance and cultural cooperation.

On June 3, 2016, Mr. Karzai met with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister, H.E. Rasit Meredov. The two sides discussed various issues of interests, including infrastructural projects such as (TAPI, railway, energy and Optic fiber), meeting of the presidents of the two countries on the sideline of Shanghai Cooperation Organization in Tashkent, border cooperation, building relationship in the border provinces, cooperation in trade; regional and international developments and his recent trip to the north and southwest provinces of Afghanistan.

During this visit, Mr. Karzai had separate meetings with the ministers of energy, trade and higher education of Turkmenistan.

In the meeting with the Minister of Energy of Turkmenistan, Mr. Karzai discussed ways to increase electricity exports to Afghanistan, raising power voltage, keeping the previous price of electricity and 500kw of electricity project.

In the meeting with the Minister of Commerce of Turkmenistan, Mr. Karzai talked about trade exchange, increase the volume of trade in Afghanistan, supply of Afghanistan’s products to Turkmenistan markets, launching mutual and unilateral trade exhibitions, elimination of tariffs and set up of the trips of businessmen of both countries to other countries.

Also in the meeting with the Minister of Higher Education of Turkmenistan, Mr. Karzai exchange views on different issues, including necessary facilities for Afghan student in Turkmenistan’s universities, mutual cooperation among scientific and educational institutions, cooperation in training official languages of Afghanistan, training of Afghan cadres in the fields of railways, power, oil and gas, and inviting the scholars of the two countries in scientific seminars.
